Èze is a medieval village that sits on a rocky peak around 430 metres above the sea, halfway between Nice and Monaco. Its stone lanes, galleries, gardens and hotel terraces look straight down to the Mediterranean, and the approach by the Corniche roads is one of the most beautiful drives in France. The village is small, steep and closed to cars at its core, which makes a chauffeur especially useful. Getting to Èze from Nice, Monaco and the airport

Èze is about 12 kilometres from the centre of Nice and roughly 20 kilometres from Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, a drive of around 30 minutes. From Monaco it is only about 10 kilometres, a short ride up the hill. There are three coastal roads: the Basse Corniche at sea level, the Moyenne Corniche that passes through the village, and the Grande Corniche high above.

The old village and its lanes

Èze's old centre is a maze of narrow stone streets, covered passages and stairways, with houses that seem to grow from the rock. Small art galleries, ceramic studios and craft shops occupy former homes, and every turn opens onto a view. The pace is slow, and the best way to see the village is on foot, in an hour or two.

The Exotic Garden at the summit

At the top of the village, the Jardin Exotique grows cacti and succulents among the ruins of the medieval castle. From its terraces, the view covers the coast from Cap-Ferrat to Cap d'Ail and, on exceptionally clear days, reaches far out to sea. The garden is small but spectacular, and it is best in the late afternoon, when the light softens and the crowds thin.

Perfumeries, galleries and local crafts

Èze has its own perfumeries, which offer short tours and the chance to buy fragrance made in the region. The galleries along the main street show paintings, sculpture and jewellery, and some artists work in view of visitors. Hotel terraces and fine dining

Èze is known for the terraces of its hotels, including the historic Château Eza and the Château de la Chèvre d'Or, which offer lunch and dinner with views over the sea. Tables for sunset are the most sought after, and booking ahead is advised. After dinner, taxis are rare and the road down is winding, so a pre-booked chauffeur waiting at the door is a relief.
